BIO / ONASIS CIRINEO

Onasis Cirineo is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in the Bronx, a first-generation Dominican American with a passion for storytelling, he looks to capture joy in the face of resistance while crafting visually striking and emotionally resonant stories that push boundaries and challenge perspectives.

His most recent exhibition Sue Fu la Luz intersects light manipulation, composition, and editing to examine hegemony through the lens of colonialism, analyzing the relationship between gentrification, identity, and self-discovery.

By manipulating light in his photography, he alters the identity of the subjects being portrayed, a method used to document the changing landscape of the metropolis. He situates the historical, structural, and active attempt to displace Black and Brown communities while celebrating the way people reclaim joy. His work demonstrates that resilience and beauty can coexist because, in our communities, they always had to.
